The GoH at Boskone this year is Alastair Reynolds. I don't know why they insist on holding the major Boston cons in the dead of winter, but there you go. |

Well, I have an odd question today. Its a little fix-it yourself (so maybe the men in your lives would know too? Im not sure.) My boyfriend and I are wanting to recarpet our dining room and hallway, and take out the carpet in our extra room (which serves as our puppy's room for when we are not home during the day.) The recarpeting isn't a problem, I have a bunch of handy men in my family that will do it for some beer. Haha, but its the extra room Im worried about...all the floors under the carpets are real hardwood (extremely gorgous medium dark hardwood that makes my heart melt in happy. Haha.) My boyfriend wont let us have hardwood in the main areas, so only my room/guest room (my crafting/sewing room) has hardwood. :/ Its unfortunate. We dont want to put new carpet in our puppy's room because she still has accidents and we dont want to spend the money on something that is going to get ruined soon anyways, so we were thinking of just not putting carpet in...there's where I stopped my boyfriend, there is no way Im going to willingly let him ruin the hardwood. >.< I would die. So we agreed to tile it for now...but again...dont want to ruin the wood. Question: Is there anyway...or anything to put down over the hardwood (like plywood or something) that we can vinyl tile over, but isn't going to ruin the floor under it? Like no glue, no nails in the middle of the floor, ect. Any answers would be great and extremely helpful! Thanks! |

Don't you hate it...
when after grunting and straining to pass what feels like the hugest turd ever, you look in the toilet and see this little clumpy thing? How can something that small in the toilet be so large coming out one's asshole? |

LJ DR!
Aight ... so the bf got diagnosed w/ pneumonia yesterday. (I'm convinced that it wouldn't have gotten that bad had he gone to the dr 2 weeks ago like I told him to). I'm hoping mine has nothing to do w/ his ... Anyways ... Starting yesterday I started feeling like there was a marble on the left side of my throat where my gland is. It makes a popping sound when I push on it (I'm the only one that can hear it .. it's not loud) but it occasionally feels like razor blades when I swallow. And when that started my left ear also started to hurt. At present I'm insurance-less, so I'm hoping that the LJ dr can help me out here. |

It's 5am and I am having an awful time! I got kind of drunk/high and totally pigged out on nearly a whole bag of chips, which has resulted in late night nausea-turned horrible diarrhea. It was kind of bleedy, and incredibly burny, and lo' behold I have a fucking hemorrhoid. It's my first one and I hate my life. Is it true these things normally go away on their own? Current Mood: uncomfortable |

I. Hate. Morning. Breath. I don't have a particularly good type to start with, but this morning I woke up and it was as if I'd fallen asleep with some of last night's curry in my mouth and it had gone rancid trapped in with my body heat. One of the few times I've ever woken up and actually ran to brush my teeth and gargle a a gallon of mouthwash before anything else. |

IBG event
To follow live updates of the IBG charity event, watch these sites: XFN's news postXFN's TwitterThread on BigLightThread on HavenSnips of interest: Rob Bowman asks Gillian," how does it feel to be Scully?"
When Gillian was on a plane she saw a picture of herself and said it was the weirdest feeling and came to appreciate the fortune they all had. Gillian says it feels pretty awesome!
Frank said she didn't enjoy playing Scully, but kissing Mulder was ok.
Chris is asking when it was the first time they cursed his name to Gillian, Frank and Rob. Gillian says the first episode. Frank says he didn't curse Chris and Gillian says shut up. Frank says Chris is a difficult and demanding boss. Rob says Chris was intense about the show quality. Rob said they had to operate in the edge of talent of people and the schedules were really hard. He said they had 3 to 4 years of bliss. Rob said it was amazing to work in such and amazing environment with such creative people. He said he remembers getting yelled at a lot.
Frank asks Gillian what movies make her cry. She says Bambi. Same question to Chris. He says Babette's Feast. Rob says the end of Fly Away Home. Gillian says she has new movie coming out called Dean Spanley based on a New Zealand folk tale.
Gillian is asking Chris what was the first thing that came to his mind when he found out she was pregnant. He said rats, then he said he was surprised. He says we have a situation to deal with. In the end it worked out well.
Gillian says she "deserved all the penance she went through concerning her pregnancy... but the trunk was out of line." [haha, Duane Barry reference]
2012 is looming and it would be the subject of a third movie. They said the fan campaign approaching FOX is mindblowing! Chris Carter said no announcement of greenlight at this time.
Gillian sharing her special memory of Sheila Larken - "she's like my real mom". to be updated... |

Aerospace thought problem.
So yogurtrifle talks to other people on the Internet besides me though I don't see why. Apparently on one of the boards she frequents there's a problem that's banned because of the arguments it causes: There is a plane on a runway, accelerating to takeoff speed. However, the runway moves backwards in such a fashion that its speed is always exactly the same as the plane's, in the opposite direction. Can the plane ever take off? I say it should be be "Can a plane on a treadmill ever take off?" which is much simpler to visualize. (I imagine the plane wearing a stretchy terrycloth headband and an iPod.) The answer strikes me as a very simple and intuitive "no." The velocity vectors cancel precisely, meaning the plane's velocity with respect to the air is zero, and thus no lift can be generated. No work is being done because no distance is being covered. I'm told there is some physicist wankery about how the engines will eventually move enough air that they're generating a vacuum and thus the plane will lift Bernoulli approximate the plane as a sphere blah blah blah I am a physicist and therefore useless. Civilian high-bypass turbofans generate most of their pressure differential in the combustor. The only external pressure differential generated by air flow, and thus relevant to possibly generating lift in this scenario, is from the bypass, and bypass air accelerates very little. You'd be even worse off to assume a low-bypass military engine, because they move less air through the bypass. They have a higher net exhaust velocity, but that's because of the thermodynamics within the combustor, not the fan fluid dynamics. ...If they're assuming some kind of unobtanium engine that doesn't experience friction losses and is powered by wishful thinking, they can kiss my ass. |

SO MUCH BLOOD!
I had gastric bypass back in September. It's great, and I've lost 75 pounds so far. HOWEVER. For the past year or so I've not had a period unless I take Provera, and if I skip a month it's heavier than you can imagine, and very clotty. Now that I'm losing weight, and I assume my PCOS is getting better, I've just been bleeding pretty much constantly for the past 3 weeks..so many clots. I've been wearing Depends at night and when I leave the house. But that's not the problem. I go through a lot of tampons in a day, and I have a very bad habit of flushing them even though we have a septic tank. It's got to stop. But I can't just pull it out and wrap it in toilet paper..there's usually a gigantic clot glued to the end, and it flops around and drips everywhere. The toilet paper gets soaked, and I end up with blood all over the toilet seat and my hands. Quick, someone solve this for me. Is there a more hygienic, discrete and less messy way to dispose of the tampons? Current Mood: Unnecessarily bloodyCurrent Music: Shatter - Feeder |
